An interesting fact is that the Dalmatian people came from a culture rich in wine making, however when they arrived in New Zealand, Kiwis weren't into wine that much and it wasnt until the Americans were stationed here in WW2 that wine was more appreciated in New Zealand. By the 1950s over 80 wineries were owned by Dalmatian families in West Auckland. In 1939, Soljans wines was established in Kumeu and operates today as a winery and complete wedding ceremony/reception venue in Auckland. They also hold their annual Berba festival at Easter each year, which is when harvest time is celebrated by the stomping of the grapes.
